It’s hard to believe that all 48 World Cup teams have played their initial matches of the tournament. Now, we turn the page to the second round of group stage matches, starting in Atlanta as Czechia and South Africa each look to get their first wins in Group A.

Czechia actually started its opening match off well against South Korea in Guadalajara. Czech captain Ladislav Krejci made it 1-0 just before the hour mark, but an equalizer from Hwang In-beom in the 67th minute and Oh Hyeon-gyu’s match winner with 10 minutes remaining in normal time secured a 2-1 win South Korean win. Meanwhile, it was a much rougher start for Bafana Bafana: not only did they fell to Mexico 2-0 in the Azteca, but Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane were sent off in the 50th and 84th minute, respectively.

Each team losing their first match puts them both in an immediate pressure situation. A Czechia loss coupled with a result for Mexico against South Korea eliminates Repre from knockout round contention. A South Africa loss coupled with a Mexico loss means Bafana Bafana will fail to make the Round of 32.
