Day two of Atlanta’s World Cup matches kicked off with another matinee performance, this time between two teams who absolutely needed a win in Group A. The expectation was certainly that both Czechia and South Africa would push hard for goals now that the second round of group stage matches were underway, and it didn’t take long for Czechia to start the party in the 5th minute. The vibe inside the stadium was a slight contrast to that of Spain and Cabo Verde a few days ago, where the majority Spain fans entered confident while Cabo Verde fans got louder as they went from hoping against all odds to celebrating a historical result. The fans for both Czechia and Bafana Bafana were more evenly matched, with a large contingent of neutrals simply representing the love of the game in Atlanta. Here are the final whistle reactions from another amazing World Cup match day in Atlanta!
Bafana Bafana
Despite going down a goal early, South Africa controlled a large portion of the first half. They were unable to create many opportunities from it, but they made life on the pitch hell for Czechia. Their fans showed out, though, making as much vuvuzela-less noise as they possibly could to urge their team forward. Many made the long journey all the way from Johannesburg to be here in Atlanta, and had thoroughly been enjoying the states since they arrived. Unfortunately, the team’s lack of quality in front of goal continued to show itself as Czechia would immediately bunker down when South Africa had possession.
And then there was the penalty. South Africa has been pushing all game, and were arguably the better side since Czechia seemed resigned to just hold on to a 1-0 lead. In the 83rd minute, Teboho Mokoena drilled home the penalty after a clear handball in the box, and the stadium absolutely erupted. I mean eardrums-are-hurting kind of loud. What a moment.
Czechia
From a fan perspective, Czechia – or as I was corrected by two Czechs themselves, Czech Republic – had fans from everywhere, also. They were thoroughly involved the entire match, especially after going up 1-0 in the first five minutes. But while the fans stayed hyped, the team settled in and gave South Africa much of the possession. Czechia had about 70 minutes of disciplined bus-parking and trying to cooly hit on the counter, but South Africa’s consistent pressure would ultimately earn the aforementioned penalty to make it 1-1 in the final few moments of the match.
Overall, though, from a neutral perspective, Czechia’s performance was honestly a tad lackluster overall. To go up so early in a World Cup match that you essentially need to win and then let off the gas totally is just a let down, and I imagine fans will feel similarly.

Unfortunately, the result doesn’t do much for either of these teams, as both Mexico and South Korea are sitting on at the top of the table, but with their match later today, it’ll be intriguing to see if Group A’s third match day turns into the potential for a big upset.
