After Groups A and B played their second matches of the World Cup’s group stage on Thursday, Groups C and D – including the USMNT and Paraguay — do the same on Friday.
The USMNT, looking to build on a 4-1 win over Paraguay a week ago, faces Australia in Seattle to start the day off. The permutations are cut-and-dry: a win over the Socceroos clinches a spot for the Americans in the knockout round. A win coupled with dropped points by Türkiye against Paraguay in Santa Clara means the USMNT clinches Group B, guaranteeing them a match on July 2 in Vancouver against a third-place team from either Group E, F, G, I, or J. If Australia wins, it will have a spot in the final 32; that and dropped points for Paraguay mean the Socceroos take Group B.
The other Group B match sees Paraguay hoping to keep its tournament alive, but a loss to Türkiye paired with a result for Australia against the USMNT eliminates La Albirroja from knockout stage contention. A Paraguay win plus dropped points for the Socceroos against the U.S. puts Türkiye out of the running for a Round of 32 slot.
Scotland, meanwhile, can punch its own ticket to the knockout round if it manages to beat favored Morocco in Foxborough. Morocco drew Brazil 1-1 but will look to claim its first victory of the tournament and put itself in a solid position with Haiti looming to wrap up the group stage. In the other Group A match, Brazil isn’t expected to have much trouble against Haiti in Philadelphia.
