An improved second half wasn’t enough to overcome a miserable first half as Atlanta United fell 3-1 at the Columbus Crew on Wednesday. The loss was Atlanta’s third straight as it has yet to claim a point three matches into a 5-match away stretch.
This one barely resembled anything remotely competitive in the opening 45 minutes as the Crew struck for 3 first-half goals.
The first came in the 23rd minute on a picture-perfect chipped pass from Dylan Chambost to Andres Herrera, who ran in unmarked and fired it past Brad Guzan for a 1-0 lead. Jacen Russell-Rowe then made it 2-0 in the 32nd minute, finishing from an acute angle at Guzan’s near post that Guzan should have done much better with. Russell-Rowe then made it 3-0 in the 42nd minute as an Atlanta giveaway ended with the Canadian international making it a brace for himself.

Atlanta found a lifeline right before the hour mark as Brooks Lennon’s initial redirection was not given but was eventually and correctly judged to have crossed the goal line after a VAR check. And it could have been 3-2 moments later as Miguel Almiron played Latte Lath into space, but Latte Lath’s shot went wide of the target.
That was the last real chance of the match for Atlanta as the Crew kept the visitors at arm’s length the rest of the way, even with Saba Lobjanidze and Jamal Thiare entering in the 77th minute as Atlanta sought to pull level.
Atlanta don’t play again until July 5 as it travels to face D.C. United. Friday’s originally scheduled contest at Inter Miami has been rescheduled for October 11 due to Miami’s Club World Cup Round of 16 match against Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

First time i’ve ever turned the game off before half. Those 3 goals were enough for me to not care about the outcome. It was very clear our backline was not ready, our midfield attempted to step up, but the issue here is we can not for the life of us link up play. We cannot connect, advance, or control the ball and it’s quite sad to watch.
Was the second half really better, or did Columbus just mostly coast the rest of the way? Just because they did not run up the score further does not necessarily mean we played better.
We had 2 shots on goal, one in the first half and one in the 2nd that actually went in.
During the radio broadcast, they noted that when Columbus was in the attacking 3rd, there were multiple pass options for them. When AU was, there was generally only one passing option, if that. Stark difference.

Well, I stopped watching after the second goal. I thought they were going to score a couple of more goals before halftime. When is coaching accountable for these terrible performances?
when is our sports medicine staff going to be responsible for all these injuries and recovery?
If you watch the warmups before matches, you can see the players are “going through the motions” without really putting any effort to get loosened up to avoid injuries – and I suspect that behavior is a carryover from daily practice sessions. Watched Chelsea and LAFC warmup, and their players seem to care. This lack of care starts with the coaching staff (including the physios) and needs to change.
Am I crazy to think the only player on this squad that I have any confidence in is Pedro Amador?
Fire the manager fire the front office this team needs a whole new squad
ATL UTD will continue to “lag” behind the rest of the great teams in MLS……pun intended.
Thankfully, LA Galaxy, Montreal and Toronto are keeping us from claiming outright ownership of the Wooden Spoon – though nothing is certain just yet.
Agreed and we play Toronto FC on July 12th, and as you said things can change.
I didn’t even know we had a game and I’m not even sad I missed it.
My thoughts exactly
Another crapfest
And the team that we thought we were gonna be in the 2010’s will be playing in a showcase game this weekend in our home stadium. I guess we were wrong about it not being better to sign aging superstars.
We were gonna change mls….
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same…as…it…ever…was

Hopefully Garth will ask himself “well, how did I get here?”
